Emily attended University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and Belmont University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Business. She completed her Master of Science in Social Work at Columbia University and a year of post-graduate training in Family Therapy at Ackerman Institute in New York City in her training to become a therapist.

Since graduate school, Emily has worked in a clinical and research capacity with the National Development and Research Institute of New York City and then for ten years with Vanderbilt University’s Psychology and Human Development Department. She has written numerous psychotherapy interventions and published in academic journals with experts in the fields of depression, parenting, stress and coping, and substance/alcohol recovery.

Since 2010, Emily has also maintained a private therapist practice treating adolescents and adults. She continues to serve as a professional consultant to Vanderbilt, providing clinical supervision and leading groups that target depression.

As a therapist, Emily’s evidence-based approaches include (but are not limited to) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Harm Reduction. She is also certified in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), which is an evidence-based treatment for young children, ages 2 to 7 years-old, with emotional and behavioral problems that places emphasis on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing parent-child interaction patterns.

In terms of assessment, Emily has been trained in conducting semi-structured interviews with children and adults to assess for DSM disorders. She utilizes those in combination with standardized, empirically validated measures and individualized interviews to help clients and providers gain a thorough and comprehensive understanding of what they are experiencing and then to inform their choice of treatment plan.  She enjoys the process of learning everything about her client’s experience and collaborating with other professionals to ensure the highest quality of care.
